Know the theory of graphic design
Above all, color theory, composition and typography. This knowledge will help you create an eye-catching, attention-grabbing image.

Understand screenwriting.
Often, motion designers create storylines, albeit for short stories, using the techniques of drama. This requires thinking through the visuals of stage action and the behavior of animated objects.

Work in the programs
Adobe After Effects is the editor with which you should start working in motion design. It has tools for creating 2D graphics, animation and various effects. It can create, for example, a video screen saver for a YouTube show and an animated vector logo.

Adobe Illustrator – in this editor to create vector images and illustrations, and then in After Effects to animate them.

Cinema 4D – software for creating three-dimensional elements. In it you can line up the light, impose textures, create a realistic and atmospheric animation. Here is a module for creating textures, such as hair, simulate fabric and smoke and dust effects, which will help even an ordinary geometric object to give life and character.

Premiere Pro – you can create and edit an animated product video. In the same it is possible to make showreel – a roller with the presentation of their own projects.

Create renders
Rendering – a translation of the graphics created from 2D and 3D in the desired format – video, static images, or frame sequences (the type of preservation, in which each frame is saved in a separate image). Rendering is used in cinematography, games, advertising and presentations.

Presenting projects
Designer often talks to client directly: presents his ideas, shows results and makes corrections.

Keeping track of trends
Motion design is a new sphere, therefore it develops and grows rapidly. To be in demand as a specialist, you need to follow changes and trends. Then it will be possible to create original works and develop.

Pros and cons of the profession

Pros
Remote work
You don’t have to sit in a state or agency. You can work for yourself from anywhere in the world and determine the cost of your services yourself. In addition, you can choose your own clients and work only with those projects that interest you.

Opportunity to develop
To stay in demand, you need to keep your hand on the pulse all the time. Keeping track of trends, competitors’ work, areas of specialization – all this is an integral part of a designer’s work. The work keeps you up to date, and it helps you advance in your career.

Cons
Expensive software and equipment.
The same Adobe After Effects costs from $20.99 per month, and often one editor isn’t enough to do a full job. To make editors to “hang”, you need a fairly powerful computer. So you have to invest in equipment that can handle the work in these applications.

Laconic drawings made with thin lines, combination of different techniques, glitch effect and 3D-figures are topical.

Solid 3D
Let’s put this trend on the first place, as the popularity of 3D elements is off the scale. Almost no motion design product is without them, whether it’s a presentation of a new product or visual content for games.

Combining 2D and 3D
A fashionable trend that is still not going to run out of steam. Combining 2D and 3D users like it, so this technique can be found not only in advertising products with a large budget, but also in companies with limited resources.

Animated logos
This trend is still relevant, because it contributes to better memorability of the logo, attracts attention to the site or monitor that broadcasts advertising. Trendy tricks of the year 2023 are the effect of flowing, the volume, mixing of different styles.

Interface animation
Performs utilitarian functions – prompts which action to perform, displays changes after the completed step, offers tips and chats, tells the history of the brand. This is just a small part of the options implemented on the site or in the application by the forces of motion design.

Stop Motion
Moving pictures are more appealing – nowadays even schoolchildren tic-tac-toe are widely using this uncomplicated knowledge. A simple clip in the style of stop motion will do a great job of promoting a product or service.

Motion collage
“Combine everything!” – The unofficial slogan of designers in 2023. The combination of ordinary pictures with illustrations or 3D, replacement of a part of a realistic photo with a picture, transition of one image into another – any of these methods makes the design of a page in the social network, blog or site unusual and memorable.

Massurrealism
Surrealistic images in combination with modern technologies allow you to create a moush-objects that attract attention and make you think. You can combine classical works of art with characters from the future, mythical characters placed in a realistic environment, insert 3D-objects into an ordinary video, and so on.

Retro graphics
Animated images in a retro style were widely used in motion design in 2020, and the development of this trend continues. Graphics referring to the past are set in motion, which creates the effect of reviving a long past reality. This unconventional solution resonates with the mass audience and attracts attention.

The Glitch Art Effect
The aesthetics of mistakes are always in demand by designers, and 2023 was no exception. Deliberate distortion, visual noise, disruption of familiar settings – all this attracts attention, and if you add elements of animation – leaves an indelible impression. Such objects want to consider, immerse themselves in them, feel a part of another reality.

Video Explainer
A simple way to intrigue the user – to show him a video demonstrating a process or explaining the correct order of operations. Such a video enjoys unchanging success: people like to watch other people’s actions, so the motion designers could not ignore this type of content.

GIF
Looped animated images for a long time seemed like something frivolous and were used solely for entertainment purposes. In 2023, they have the role of an effective marketing tool widely used in social networks.

Cinemagraph
A photo to which a looped animation is added comes to life. An uncomplicated solution, but such an image works much better than a static picture.

Morphing
A technique that allows the designer to achieve the effect of transforming one object into another. Opens up a wide range of opportunities to attract the attention of users to several objects simultaneously. For example, you can visually demonstrate the state before and after (repairs, cosmetic services, sports exercises, etc.).

Kinetic typography.
Unusual appearance of fonts, stretched, twisted, inverted appearance of letters – another working way to attract the attention of users. The eye is involuntarily drawn to anything outside of the pattern, which is why kinetic typography is so often used by designers.

Fine lines
Video lines can be used to point to an important object or emphasize the contours of an object. Trend 2023 – thin graceful lines of contrasting shades compared to the overall background of the picture.

Grain
Such texture imitates a low-quality photo, makes simple images more interesting, adds them a touch of retro and causes nostalgia.

Gradients
A smooth transition from one color to another is often used to create backgrounds, illustrations and user interfaces. It’s always spectacular and eye-catching, so it’s never out of a designer’s arsenal, and it looks even more impressive in a motion version.

Broken text
This technique is also related to typography: the text appears on the screen gradually, the words appear in different parts of the picture, in letters or words, in different colors, fonts and sizes. Many variations, it all depends on the goal facing the creator of the motion-product.

Photoshop
The most famous application for working with images, the name of which is known even to people who are far from this sphere of activity. The word “Photoshop” has stuck in the lexicon of ordinary users with the meaning “to change, improve, tweak the picture”, but these actions are not the only ones that make Photoshop functional.

This is a program with a wide range of functions, thanks to which the motion designer can solve a lot of everyday problems: creating Matte Painting and GIFs, editing textures, merging images, overlaying frame-by-frame animation.

Working in Photoshop is very convenient because of the excellent integration with other Creative Cloud products, documents can be easily imported from this editor to After Effects and back. For those who are just getting started with motion design, it’s best to start learning with this program.

Illustrator
Despite the superficial similarity with Photoshop, the editor from Adobe has a completely different functionality. The main difference is the format of the images: in Photoshop they are pixelated (raster), and in Illustrator they are vector-based, which greatly expands the possibilities for the motion designer. The absence of pixels guarantees the preservation of quality when scaling, and this is very important when working with logos, shape objects, and vector backgrounds.

Importing files into After Effects to create an animated image is no problem either. When you change a logo, all you have to do is save it to Illustrator, and it will update automatically in AE.

After Effects
Without this program you can, of course, make quality animation for motion design. But why complicate your life when there is such a versatile software as Adobe After Effects?

After Effects is designed to create 2.5D animation. The program allows you to solve any problem, except 3D modeling. It is an ideal editor for motion designers, because it allows them to combine all the elements of the future movie, prepared in Photoshop and Illustrator.

It’s very difficult to list all the features of After Effects, we’ll note only the most popular. With this program realized character animation, the appearance of logos, 3D-composition, motion-tracking (motion tracking), simulation effects, slide show design, kinetic typography, numerous visual effects.

Motion design and After Effects are made for each other: in this program objects are animated, then the result of the work is exported into the video editor and becomes one of the elements of the finished product.

Premiere Pro
The program is also part of the Creative Cloud. While a few years ago different professionals had their own preferences in choosing a software for combining all the components of the video, today most of them consider Premiere Pro as the most convenient way to bring together the individual objects.

Although Premiere Pro is a video editor whose functionality allows it to solve many problems beyond motion design. We are interested in it primarily as a tool to glue parts of the clip, adding sound effects and music. This work can be done in other similar programs, but Premiere stands out from the competition with a large number of additional options.

Cinema 4D
After mastering these programs can begin experimenting with 3D-modeling, and Cinema 4D is ideally suited for this. The user friendly and easy to understand interface has made this software popular with motion designers.

The program is designed for modeling, animation and adding simulation effects. Cinema 4D has a wide range of functions, so it is used even by some small Hollywood studios.

Cinema 4D
Sharks of the film industry prefer more serious tools such as Maya for professional work on VFX.

To quickly create high-quality 3D models, developers have made provision for integrating Cinema 4D with a variety of GPU render engines. The most common is Octane, which you will have to buy separately.

Motion design is ideal for creating meaningful but concise messages. It’s also a good choice for complex projects where you can’t get the point across in any other way.

Three main advantages of animated graphics:

Delivers the message quickly. In advertising and infographics, brevity and clarity are key parameters due to time constraints.
Reveals complex ideas, concepts, systematizes data in a simple and understandable form. This is exactly the case when an image is worth a thousand words. A huge amount of information fits into a short video, and at the same time it is easily digested by the viewer.
It’s easy to catch and hold attention. Most users choose video over reading. Animated graphics appeal to the viewer, and that’s why they’re so popular.

Motion design is a process of creating animation graphics
Animation graphics, also known as motion graphics, is a visual design that animates a static image. Internet, media and advertising, television, movies, mobile applications, video games – not one of these areas is without it.

Every animated text or image encountered in everyday life is conceived by a motion designer. Animation graphics uses three channels of information at once: image, text and sound, and the viewer better assimilates the data.

Motion graphics can be used to visualize concrete data and abstract ideas. This uses visual effects, audio, graphic design, and various animation techniques. This turns a static picture into a dynamic one.

Animation graphics must be distinguished from regular video and familiar animation. Motion graphics is not a cartoon, it illustrates data or ideas, rather than revealing a full-fledged story.

No one knows exactly how and when animation graphics originated. Around the 1940s, the first experimental works by Oscar Fischinger and Norman McLaren appeared. However, the earliest recognized master can be called the graphic designer and director Saul Bass, who in the 60s popularized motion graphics in movies.

Bass collaborated with Hitchcock, Preminger, Kubrick and Scorsese. One of his most famous works is the title credits for Otto Preminger’s The Man with the Golden Arm: the hand of the main character is composed of white stripes on a black background.

There’s nothing surprising about such techniques today, but for the ’50s and ’60s it was a sensation.

Never before had people seen such a combination of graphics and animation

Since then, other artists began to use motion graphics not only in film, but also in other areas. As a result, today it is one of the most popular types of animation.

The demand for this direction among customers is very high for several reasons:

Creative approach to presenting content that arouses the interest of users
Animated objects attract more attention from site visitors than static images and phrases. Motion design allows you to create unusual elements of page design by using 3D effects, sound track overlay and panoramic video.

Getting information without too much effort
Video content is more popular than texts: people are more willing to watch rather than read and analyze articles, and this is understandable. Thus, new information is digested better, because it is presented in a maximum accessible form, illustrated with examples, the important points are highlighted visually, there is sound accompaniment – voice and music.

Compact presentation of information
Possibilities of motion design allow you to make even very complicated topics understandable for unprepared audience. Animated images, adding text blocks, voiceover with intonation emphasis on the phrases that require special attention – all this explains the effectiveness of this type of computer graphics and high professional requirements for specialist in the field of motion design.

Speed of perception
The quality video uses several ways to deliver information: the viewer looks, listens and reads at the same time. Viewers need much less time to assimilate the content compared to other types of presentations such as text review or listening to a sound file. Efficiency of delivery of new information, inherent in the motion design, has been successfully used in outdoor advertising, on outdoor screens: a few seconds a person gets the most information about the event or product.

Universality
The combination of several formats, enriched with the widest possibilities of modern computer technologies, allows the use of motion-design products in various fields. Screensavers for TV series, TV shows and movies, computer games promorollis, presentation of goods and services, preloader of a new web resource – all this looks informative and attractive thanks to its unique features.
