You can create a perfect cartoon character, but if his movements are unnatural, not smooth or as a robot, all the work will go to waste. That’s why animators spend a lot of time learning the basic principles of movement to make believable animation.

2D design is the foundation of graphic design and visual communication. It is about the arrangement of basic elements and principles to create visually pleasing designs.

Artists use these principles for self-expression, while graphic designers use them to provide visual communication.

Elements of 2D design
Visual communication serves as a means of conveying ideas, information and emotions to the viewer. 2D design is widely used in digital art.
The goal of a graphic designer is to communicate as clearly as possible. In some cases, this may mean not using too many visual elements.

And what are the visual elements of 2D design?

All designs are composed of the following basic elements :

• line
• color
• shape
• texture
• space

Line
Line is a powerful element that can form a dominant emotion in the observer. Lines can be straight or curved, thin or thick, continuous or broken, vertical/diagonal/horizontal.

Lines define boundaries and space, create a sense of weight and volume, etc.

Color
Color stimulates both mental and physical reactions of the viewer. There are some responses associated with warm colors (red, yellow and orange) and cool colors (blue, purple and green). In general, warm colors are associated with active and exciting emotions, while cold colors usually evoke passive and calming reactions.

Color has 3 different properties: hue, saturation (chromaticity) and value (lightness or darkness).

Hue describes the wavelength of the color. There are colors classified as “pure hues”: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet.

When you add saturation and value to a pure hue, you create new shades, tones and hues of color.

Shape
A shape is a closed two-dimensional space. The basic profile of a shape can consist of straight lines, curved lines or a combination of both.

There are 2 general categories of shapes: geometric and freeform.

Geometric shapes are regular and can be described in mathematical terms. Some examples are: triangles, squares, circles, ellipses, pentagons, etc.

Free-form shapes are more difficult to define because they are irregular and uneven. Some examples of freeform shapes are: clouds, butterflies, leaves, trees, stones, fire…

Texture.
Texture refers to the feel or appearance of a surface (how the surface feels to the touch or how it is perceived).

Tactile texture is the texture that can be felt by touch. Designers in 2D design use the second type – Visual texture. Visual texture is created on a flat surface and it is basically an illusion of tactile texture.

The texture of an object can look rough, smooth, soft, hard, silky, shiny, pebbly, etc.

Space
Space is the area around, above, below or behind an object. In 2D design, space creates the illusion of a third dimension. For example, in a 2D setting, space can be created by shadows, size, overlay, or a color different from the background.

Example: you can use size to create the illusion of larger objects appearing closer and smaller objects appearing more distant.

Principles of 2D design
The principles of good two-dimensional design guide designers through the design process. The goal is to create effective and aesthetically pleasing results.

Principles of 2D design:

Unity – provides a sense of cohesion
Balance – balance can be symmetrical (the 2 halves of the composition appear equal) or asymmetrical
Rhythm/repetition – repetition of visual elements
Harmony – a combination of similar or related elements
Accent – determining the most important visual center
Contrast – comparing one extreme with another
Proportion – one shape in relation to the size of another shape

Generalists VS specialists
Generalists are those who know how to do everything a little bit at a time. They are especially valued when it is difficult to divide a task into separate steps and subtasks. Such multifunctional specialists are in demand in motion design, because every commercial is unique. And, if the big animation studios, experts can spend years simulating the whole forest, which, say, 100 trees, in the studios of motion design such large, long-playing tasks almost never happens.

At the same time, the roles can still be classified and divided. A model has to come from somewhere, get color, surface, textures, shading, start moving. And so there are already four specialties (modeler, shading artist, lasing artist, animator) within one head, the generalist, must be. That’s why many people are afraid of 3D, because four specialties are already difficult to learn

From the difficulties of mastering and the high requirements for specialists come the pluses of 3D:
Due to the fact that it’s difficult and not many people know how to do 3D – it’s valued and expensive.
The viewer willingly believes in 3D commercials. And despite the fact that the three-dimensional video is computer-generated – there is still the belief that it is real. And, from the point of view of advertising, there is more trust in it.

Now let’s move on to specific directions within 3D.

Stillife (brought to life static).
Stillife – these are still lifes or other compositions in which there are no people or characters. The simplest type of 3D clips and, compared to other types of 3D, a more artistic direction. For example, clips for Hadoro. Not as complex animation here – just moving objects. But the picture sells, and the success of the video does not depend on the complexity, but rather on the quality of execution.

Pros of the approach:
This is an affordable direction in terms of entry requirements and additional knowledge. For example, when illustrators come to the studio Effectno, we offer them to try their hand at it. And despite their fears, the illustrator is able to put together a beautiful composition. So, if you have a taste, why not try your hand at working with other materials and software?
The client buys a picture, and that’s what everyone is interested in in the first place. And it’s just about the picture, about the real thing, so it’s in demand in different areas: advertising, architectural renderings, content in social networks, posters, posters.
Now on the Internet there are a lot of ready-made models, rendering settings. And you can get a great picture, using ready-made pictures from stock and rendering with the help of studios with a light that is already set up, creating the right mood.
Trend 2021: in interfaces appear a lot of 3D, and for specialists UX and UI stillife – also demanded and available direction.
Many companies have long ago abandoned the services of photographers and switched to rendered models. For example, all the pictures in the catalog on the IKEA site are rendered. Curiously, the height from which the sun’s rays fall on the digital copy of the products, in the catalogs of different countries – different. This is done because the customer is used to seeing the space with this lighting, with this angle of incidence of sunlight. And he is more likely to believe a picture that matches what he sees in reality.

Cons:
From the first plus comes a disadvantage: the skill to use the program will not be enough to work with a stillife. In contrast to the more complex technical areas, which we will talk about next, here you need to have taste and understanding of the composition.

What is important to know and be able to: in this direction is important taste, the ability to make a visualization. In commercials, the rate goes on the composition, color, light, rendering and post-processing. This is where you can start and what can be enough to work.
Software: a simple set of programs – Cinema 4D and rendering Octane or Red Shift.

Personal 3D animation
Working with the character 3D animation consists of the following steps:
First, the character model is prepared.

This is a program with a wide range of functions, thanks to which the motion designer can solve a lot of everyday problems: creating Matte Painting and GIFs, editing textures, merging images, overlaying frame-by-frame animation.

Working in Photoshop is very convenient because of the excellent integration with other Creative Cloud products, documents can be easily imported from this editor to After Effects and back. For those who are just getting started with motion design, it’s best to start learning with this program.

Illustrator
Despite the superficial similarity with Photoshop, the editor from Adobe has a completely different functionality. The main difference is the format of the images: in Photoshop they are pixelated (raster), and in Illustrator they are vector-based, which greatly expands the possibilities for the motion designer. The absence of pixels guarantees the preservation of quality when scaling, and this is very important when working with logos, shape objects, and vector backgrounds.

Importing files into After Effects to create an animated image is no problem either. When you change a logo, all you have to do is save it to Illustrator, and it will update automatically in AE.

After Effects
Without this program you can, of course, make quality animation for motion design. But why complicate your life when there is such a versatile software as Adobe After Effects?

After Effects is designed to create 2.5D animation. The program allows you to solve any problem, except 3D modeling. It is an ideal editor for motion designers, because it allows them to combine all the elements of the future movie, prepared in Photoshop and Illustrator.

It’s very difficult to list all the features of After Effects, we’ll note only the most popular. With this program realized character animation, the appearance of logos, 3D-composition, motion-tracking (motion tracking), simulation effects, slide show design, kinetic typography, numerous visual effects.

Motion design and After Effects are made for each other: in this program objects are animated, then the result of the work is exported into the video editor and becomes one of the elements of the finished product.

Premiere Pro
The program is also part of the Creative Cloud. While a few years ago different professionals had their own preferences in choosing a software for combining all the components of the video, today most of them consider Premiere Pro as the most convenient way to bring together the individual objects.

Although Premiere Pro is a video editor whose functionality allows it to solve many problems beyond motion design. We are interested in it primarily as a tool to glue parts of the clip, adding sound effects and music. This work can be done in other similar programs, but Premiere stands out from the competition with a large number of additional options.

Cinema 4D
After mastering these programs can begin experimenting with 3D-modeling, and Cinema 4D is ideally suited for this. The user friendly and easy to understand interface has made this software popular with motion designers.

The program is designed for modeling, animation and adding simulation effects. Cinema 4D has a wide range of functions, so it is used even by some small Hollywood studios.

Cinema 4D
Sharks of the film industry prefer more serious tools such as Maya for professional work on VFX.

To quickly create high-quality 3D models, developers have made provision for integrating Cinema 4D with a variety of GPU render engines. The most common is Octane, which you will have to buy separately.
